I wore my white satin with a pink sash, and a special person came in from Truefitt’s to do my hair. He was a restless little man, and talked to himself in French all the time. When he had finished he stepped back, and threw up his hands and said, ‘Ah, mademoiselle, c’est magnifique!’ I said, “Yes, isn’t it?” It was, too.

Only at Truefitt& Hill is there such a sense of history at every turn. Page through novels by Charles Dickens and W. Thackeray and it becomes apparent that from its inception Truefitt played a pivotal role in preparing Britain’s gentry not only for society events but also for their everyday lives. Consequently Truefitt is mentioned throughout modern English literature as a bastion of style and the highest quality service – a proud tradition we continue to uphold.
“The decision to sponsor the ILLUMINATION opening reception was an obvious one,” says Linda Mountford, Managing Director, Truefitt & Hill North America. “Truefitt & Hill has built its iconic brand of gentlemen’s shaving and grooming products upon old-world craftsmanship and attention to detail; all of our products are handmade in England with the highest degree of care and respect for tradition. Our unique fragrance formulations evoke great literary scenes of historic battles, high seas, sultry tropical islands, royal courts and more contemporary settings, and many of our patrons have been the protagonists of such scenes.”
During Truefitt & Hill’s unique history the company has had the honour of serving the Monarchs of Great Britain throughout nine consecutive reigns, beginning with King George III in 1805. Throughout this period, Truefitt & Hill has held a number of Royal Warrants, and being ‘By Royal Appointment’ remains the envy of those hairdressers less revered. The Royal connection is continued to this day by Truefitt & Hill’s Master Barbers, who visit either Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle to attend H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh, while other members of the Royal Family and the Royal Household visit Truefitt & Hill’s Premises in St. James’s. It remains, according to the Guinness Book of Records, the world’s oldest barbershop.
When William Francis Truefitt opened his shop over two hundred years ago, little did he realize that his appointment books would read like a ‘Who’s Who’ of distinguished society, including kings, princes, politicians, authors and celebrities. Names of those who shaped the history of the world are often recorded as patrons. Truefitt & Hill are honoured to include amongst their clientele almost all male members of the British Royal Family since George III, as well as numerous Royals of other European Courts, famous politicians such as William Gladstone, the Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill, and Field Marshal the Viscount Montgomery of Alamain. Many other legendary figures from the world of the arts and entertainment, who have also enjoyed the legendary Truefitt’s touch, include Charles Dickens, William M. Thackeray, Lord Byron, Oscar Wilde, Beau Brummell, Alfred Hitchcock, Laurence Olivier, Danny Kaye, as well as the celebrated, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Stewart Granger, Fred Astaire, Paul McCartney, Sting and Cary Grant.
Truefitt & Hill is proud to share this event with the many fine authors who illuminate these passions.
